Bluewater Georgina Wendake Beaches Association (BGWBA) held its 56th annual field day on August 2, 2007. One of the participants at the first field day was Vern Owen whose parents were members of the Association and key organizers of the field day, donating prizes and trophies to be awarded to the winners. Vern was a Director of the Federation in 1993 and President of the BGWBA for 26 years from 1980 until he passed away in 2006. He was an active participant in many of our community committees and causes over the years where he demonstrated his considerable skills in consensus building and reconciliation. Wendake Park was originally acquired by the BGWBA in 1951 and preceding this year’s field day, a dedication ceremony was held, with George Lawrence, Deputy-Mayor, and Andre Claire, Councillor, present representing the Township of Tiny. The park was renamed the Vern Owen Community Family Park. Vern will be missed but not forgotten by a grateful community.
