Fall Security
By Al Taylor

“There, that’ll stop ‘em,” you think as you lock the cottage door for the final time until the spring.

So many of us have not really given much thought to the vulnerability of seasonal homes from poor locks, old window catches, and the like that are the joy of thieves & vandals.

After you close up, pretend that you’ve locked yourself out and try to get inside; no problem, right? That’s how easy it is for the bad guys too. Even easier if you have a hidden key over the windowsill.

Some simple things can help.

• Replace those old locks with sturdy dead bolt types and reinforce the door jambs

• Ensure that sliding doors and windows have security bars (kits are available for upgrading)

• Remove ladders and other tools that could be used to help gain entry

• Consider hiring a firm to check your place regularly, or ask a neighbour

• Security systems are an option for some

• Check skylights & basement windows for potential ease of entry

• Consider placing motion sensors on outside lights

• Consider random timers for inside lights

• Secure all outbuildings with locks

• Set up a neighbourhood watch programme in your area

All of the above are links in overall security. The watchful eye of any full time neighbours who can spot activity on your property is invaluable; such activity in the area tends to discourage break-ins. The common thinking: “if they want to break in nothing can stop them” is not true. Make it difficult and your chances of finding your property as you left it are much better.
